Massachusetts coastal communities face significant risks from coastal storms, flooding, erosion, and sea level rise—challenges that are exacerbated by climate change. To help address these issues, Coastal Zone Management (CZM) administers the Coastal Resilience Grant Program to provide financial and technical support for local and regional efforts to increase community understanding of coastal storm and climate impacts, evaluate vulnerabilities, conduct adaptation planning, redesign and retrofit vulnerable public facilities and infrastructure, and restore shorelines to enhance natural resources and provide storm damage protection. You can learn more about the program and the different projects funded here.
In 2022, Cohasset was awarded $161,925 to assess the vulnerability of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Influent Pump Station located in Jacob’s Meadow and other public assets to current and future flooding conditions within the Cohasset Cove and James Brook Watershed. The project, “Cohasset Cove and James Brook Watershed Flood Vulnerability Assessment and Resiliency Strategies,” developed resiliency strategies to mitigate flooding risks to these critical local and regional resources. As a result of this study, the Town applied for and was awarded funding through the Coastal Resilience Grant Program for two different projects:
Priority Coastal Flood Resiliency Improvements for Wastewater Infrastructure- $220,000
James Brook Watershed Coastal Flood Pathways Mitigation Design- $227,770
These projects will continue Cohasset’s progress towards more resilient resources as we head into the future. Public information as it relates to these projects will be posted here when available.
